Cardstock Tutorial for Better Living Through Scrapbooking

Have you thought about that name?  I really do have a better life because I scrapbook.  How about you?

It was my turn to do a tutorial using our beautiful cardstock from Discount Cardstock.  I am going to teach you how to make flowers from scraps!  I have seen a number of these tutorials come out on the internet, but can I tell you a secret?  I have been making these flowers for about 3 years!  Ever since I was taught how to fringe cardstock at a CTMH convention, I kept thinking up ways to use that fringe.  Really, just play sometimes in your craft room and you will find many ways to use things!  Anyway, on to the tutorial ~

Let’s get started with the paper you need for this flower:

I’m starting with two different colors – Eggplant Felt and Kraft. I want to layer my colors so I’ve chosen to use two different cardstocks. The dimensions are Eggplant Felt – 1-1/2″ x 12″, Kraft – 2″ x 12″, and Eggplant Felt – 2-1/2″ x 12″. So you see, I added 1/2″ for every layer. With this simple start, you can create as many layers as you want in as many different colors that you want.

Fold your pieces lengthwise. If you have a bone folder, that works best to get a nice solid crease. The next step is to make those pieces into fringe. Let me show you what it looks like when you are done:

This is a quick technique using your scissors. It doesn’t have to be perfect, you just have to make sure to leave about 1/4″ uncut at the fold. I’ve been using this fringe technique for grass, cowboy fringe, and decorative elements on my pages, cards, and gifts for years. Isn’t it fun to turn it into a flower? When you are done cutting the fringe, leave your pieces folded in half. If you like a little distressing, go ahead at this point and add some ink. I love the worn look to my flowers!

Now you are going to start creating your flower, working with the narrowest piece first. I use a high temp glue gun at this point, but glue dots or strong double-sided adhesive will work, too. Put some adhesive near the fold of your cardstock, as I have shown, and start rolling it up until you reach the end:

At that point you are ready to add the next piece:

When you are done, this is what you will have:

Start fanning out the fringe:
And this is what you will end up with:

At this point, you can distress your “petals” some more. You will notice how strong and durable they are!

You can use this flower for just about anything. It is a lovely embellishment for your creations! This is strong enough that it would make a lovely pin as a gift. Just pick up a pin back at your local craft store, and attach it to the back with your glue gun. I’ve chosen to add mine to a Halloween treat bag for one of my friends. You can use an bag pattern to make one out of cardstock and then embellish as you like!

Let me know in the comments if you decide to make one of these. The Better Scrap team would love to see what your lovely work!!

Items used: Bazzill Eggplant and Kraft Cardstock (Discount Cardstock); Hallowe’en in Wonderland (Graphic 45); Black Grosgrain and Lace (Paper Source); Vintage Photo Distress Ink and Applicator Tool (Ranger Ink)

Let's Scrap Reveal Day - It's DeLovely!

Time for a new sketch from Cheri at Let's Scrap.  It's a 2-page layout, but always feel free to do just one of the pages when you participate.  This week the sponsor is Cookbookin' and they have a fabulous prize for you!

I had won a Cosmo Cricket DeLovely kit from Queen Scraps a couple of months ago.  I am always so thankful to win something that I may not purchase on my own.  I am a warm color scrapper, so I was really excited to work with these pinks and greens but I needed the right pictures.  My sister wore pink at her 25th anniversary party, so I knew right away when I saw her what paper I would use to scrapbook the event.  LOL - do you plan your pages as your taking pictures?  What a wonderful (and goofy) hobby this is!

Items used: Cosmo Crisket De Lovely paper, chipboard; vellum; gems

Sassy Lil' Sketches Bonus Sketch!

When Cherie posted that she created a bonus sketch for the month, I was really excited!!  Sassy Lil' Sketches are so much fun to use, so I sat right down to get this one done.  Any time you participate during the month, you get an entry into the drawing for the monthly prize.  I LOVE that!  We all get busy, so it's nice to know that you can participate here and there as you have the time.  Scroll down my right sidebar and you'll see the prizes for the month.  Now here's that bonus sketch, and the simple page I created with it:

I had these pictures from a walk Jerry and I took, and I've not known how to scrap them.  This is actually four pictures, but I've cut them all in half to take up 8 spots.  I really like how this simple layout turned out.  You know I'm all about making sure the picture is left to be the focal point, so I think Cherie's sketch was perfect.

Items used:  Bo Bunny Roughin' it paper, buttons, brad, and chipboard; May Arts ribbon

I am a New DT Member for The Cutting Cafe!!

I am so excited to bring you this news!!  The first time I ever worked with Regina's images at The Cutting Cafe was just a few months ago.  She was a sponsor for Sassy Lil' Sketches and gave the DT members some images to use.  I was hooked on the simplicity of this kind of digital.  These images still allow me to be completely hands on - and I love that!  If you hop over to The Cutting Cafe website, you will see the other DT members.  Stop by, say hello, and give them some love.  You will be inspired!!

I wanted to show you a couple of different images.  I am in love with the All About Boys printable stamp set!  There are 55 images in this set - WOWZERS!  I'm also very fond of the Banner set, and I used that on this page.  Now take a peek at this layout and this gorgeous little boy - Shane was sure a cute baby!!

Items used: The Cutting Cafe All About Boys and Banners; CTMH Caboodle, Organic Buttons, Sweet Leaf Cordouroy Brad, and Tiny Tab

If you are interested in digital images - whether it be templates, sentiments, pictures - take a look at Regina's site.  One thing that hooked me was the instructions.  Sounds simple, I know, but if you are not familiar with digital, it is so helpful!!  She is also fast, fast, fast in getting you the images you purchase.  I love that!!

Better Living Through Scrapbooking Blog Hop!

Are you ready for some great inspiration?  The team at Better Living Through Scrapbooking is having a Blog Hop!

Better Living Through Scrapbooking has a fabulous prize pack up for grabs, thanks to Plaid! We will be giving away a Mod Podge starter pack, plus a selection of FolkArt paints, stencils and some Extreme Glitter!  This prize pack is worth $50 retail, and will be awarded to one blog hop participant that comments on ALL of the blog posts during the hop.  You must leave your comments by Saturday, October 2nd to be eligible for the Plaid prize!

All of the design team members are creating a new project for you using the product of their choice.  You'll see a new and fresh style at each and every stop, and I am quite certain you will find a project or two (or more) that matches your style!    Here is what I put together using one of my very favorite pictures of Jerry and me.

My style is definitely more clean lines.  There's always a way to add interest to clean lines, and you'll find that in much of my work.  I like to pop things up (as I've done with "be together"), curl and crinkle (look at the flowers), layer (photo mat and ribbon), and lightly distress edges.  I'm a little bit of a perfectionist when it comes to color always making sure my different shades match and that my paper compliments the picture.  Finally, I love a pretty embellishment!!

Items used: Creative Imaginations Beloved paper and stickers; CTMH bookplate, pewter brads, hinges, and ribbon; Tim Holtz Tattered Florals die; Ranger Clear Rock Candy distress paint and Pumice Stone distress ink; ZVA bling; 7 Gypsies rub-on

As you hop, you'll find that many of the design team members are giving away RAK in addition to the big package from Plaid! So be sure to visit all 10 stops and leave comments along the way!

If you comment on all 10 blogs, you also have a chance to win a fabulous prize from me!  Winner will be drawn on Saturday and announced on my next Better Living Through Scrapbooking post on Sunday, October 3rd.

Fun Times

I changed my blog to fall colors today.  I guess it's time to let go of summer!  I have to admit that this is my favorite time of the year - my husband's, too.  We love the cooler days and even cooler nights.  The crunch of the leaves is one of my favorite sounds!

I am using a sketch today from Just Inspirational:

And how inspiring is the Tuesday Trigger from Moxie Fab?

My fall card also fulfills the challenges at CARDS (leaves), 4 Crafty Chicks (fall), Sarah Hurley (fall), and Paper Sundaes (fall).

Fall colors are just the most beautiful colors to me.  It is truly a pleasure to pull out these papers and work with them!  This is a 6x6 card using the Maple Grove collection from We R Memory Keepers.  Other items used are CTMH Ivory Ribbon; Imaginisce Hot Rocks and i-Rock tool; TPC Studios brad; Bazzill leaves; MM trinket pin.

Nikki Sivils

The Sketch-a-Thon is going on all month over at Sketches for You.  Have you played yet?  Nikki Sivils is one of the guest designers, and she generously shared some of her fall product with the designers.  I have never worked with her product before, and I had an absolute blast with her designs.  I used every little bit of what she sent as you'll see!  Nikki gave us a sketch to work with for a layout:

First off, a layout of my niece Amy's cute kiddos in a corn maze:

For this layout, I used one of Nikki's round mats and cut out the center.  It was easy enough then to pop the pictures on the back of the mat.  I used half of that circle on the top of the layout.  The little piece of ric-rac is actually a piece that I fussy cut from a border strip.  That CUTE little beaver is also fussy cut from paper.

My next project is a card:

Do you see that bread tag?  Nikki designed those and they are called bread(less) tags.  What a cute little element.  Those buttons are great, too.  Kind of a twill fabric on top - just a perfect touch!

My last project was a mini album using my favorite go-to album, the My Creations 6x6 Memory Showcase album from CTMH.  The front and back cover are almost the same, so I am showing you the front:

Nikki makes some grat papers, don't you think? Head on over to Sketches for You , to see what the rest of the DT has done!

Items used: Nikki Sivils Tree Love papers, bread(less) tag, buttons, journaling tags, and stickers; Imaginisce Hot Rocks and i-rock tool; bulk hemp; May Arts ribbons; Fancy Pants buttons and clips TPC Studios metal; CTMH memory showcase, buttons, waxy flax, and pins

Let's Scrap Reveal Day!

Another great sketch form Cheri at Let's Scrap

I actually did a 2-pager this week.  I had the perfect pictures for it, and I know my sister's been waiting for these fabulous pictures of her son and grandson to be scrapped!  I took the picture in a 2-page format, so if you'd like to see it closer just click on the photo.

These pictures are far too wonderful!  I wanted to use all the elements in Cheri's design and yet keep it simple enough so that the photos are center stage.  I like the way this one turned out!

Come back on Friday because I am going to share a challenge for the week for Let's Scrap!

Items used: Bo Bunny Learning Curve and Block Party; Martha Stewart Double Loops Punch Around the Page; Spellbinders Circles and Scalloped Circles; Slice Design Card Just Chillin'

Sassy Lil Sketches Reveal Day!

It's time to show you the sketch for the 21st from Sassy Lil Sketches!  It was my turn to design so I have an example for you.  But be sure to hop on over the SLS because the other design team members have some great work to show you, too!

I really enjoy putting together fall pages!  This lovely paper, leaves, and brads are from TPC Studios.  Anyone who knows me knows that I love matching products and try to use them as much as I can!  These precious photos are from my great-nephew Aaron taken last fall.  Isn't he adorable?!  I used my Slice Design Card - Thinking of You - to cut out the word "fall."

Have you been playing at Sassy Lil Sketches?  Take a look at my right sidebar to see the prizes.  Each time you play (play dates are the 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th), you get an entry in the drawing.  You can do your work each week or any time during the month.  Just have them posted by the end of the month to be included.  Cherie has FABULOUS sketches, so I think you'd enjoy it!!

Happy Christmas

I had so much fun putting this card together!  It was fast and simple, and it will make a great holiday greeting.  I used the sketch from Heart 2 Heart Challenges:

It's always so natural and fun for me to use Close To My Heart products.  The colors blend perfectly, and I love that I have ink for every exclusive color.  (Once a consultant, always a fan that spreads the good about CTMH!!)

I combined this challenge with the Weekly Christmas Card Challenge (distressing) and Keep it Simple (bling).  Loads of distressing on this card and 45 bitty sparkles!  They are so much fun!

Items used (All CTMH unless noted): Jingle Level 2; A Little Bit of Everything stamp set; White Daisy Bigger Brads; Juniper Ink; Bitty Sparkles; Edge Distresser; Spellbinders Oval and Scalloped Oval

Happiness Is...

I had the pictures from our 20th anniversary celebration put into an 8x10 collage.  So easy to do, and what a fun way to scrap all the pictures!  I scrapped this on a True Fit Folio from CTMH.  Have you seen these?  They are just the best thing, and I have a lot of them in my scrapbooks.  They come white and are like file folders for your scrapbook.  I put menus and little memorabilia in this one.

Items used:  Graphic 45 Steampunk paper; CTMH Black Textured Cardstock, True Fit Folio, Pewter Brads, and Rub-Ons; Tim Holtz Alterations Tattered Florals Die; Ranger Clear Rock Candy Distress Paint; Imaginisce Hot Rocks and i-Rock tool; Prima flowers; Tattered Angels Crepe Ribbon; May Arts ribbon; Fiskars Scalloped Border Punch

Now, I want to share something with you - and even show you an example.  Yesterday my mother-in-law was here scrapping with me.  She brought some magnetic albums in order to take the pictures out.  The pictures are faded from being in the magnetic, and when she pulled the first one out, it tore!

I am so glad she is doing this.  I took a picture to show you how difficult the process was.  She carefully peeled each one using my Slice spatula.  Oh gracious!!  If you still have pictures in magnetic albums, you might consider taking them out soon!  If you are a legacy scrapper, you want your pictures to last through the generations and they just won't last in those old magnetic books.  Just my two cents for the day - LOL!!

Better Living Through Scrapbooking Reveal Day!

Time for a new challenge!  Have you been playing along?  When you complete all four challenges for the month, you are eligible to win one of the great monthly prizes from our generous sponsors.  Take a look at them on my right sidebar.  You don't have to finish one challenge before the next one comes out.  You just have to complete them all in one given month to be entered for the goodies.  I love the concept of Better Living through Scrapbooking which is "challenges to heal your soul and inspire your mind."  Give us a visit.  I bet you'll find a challenge you'd love to do that will help you grow in this hobby!

Let me tell you about this week's challenge:
"Holiday paper challenge”
Use holiday-themed papers (Christmas, Halloween, Easter, 4th of July, etc.) to create a non-holiday themed page layout or mini album.

Choose at least two of the following:

1. Use photos that are at least five years old.
2. Use punches or a die-cut machine to hand-make embellishments or letters out of patterned paper for your page.
3. Use pop-dots to give 3-D dimension to an element of your page.
4. Use numbers in the title of your page.
5. Use rubber or acrylic stamps somewhere on your page.

When I pulled out this picture, the first thing I noticed was Shane's shorts. Look at all those colors! I thought of Hallowe'en in Wonderland right away. It is just the perfect match! Have you noticed lately that many holiday papers are useful all year round? That is such a great trend! Those fabulous double sides are a bonus, I think, and make patterned papers so much more valuable. Doesn't this holiday paper work perfectly for this every day photo?

I really like that although this paper seems busy, Shane's little face is the focal point. I've used four options on this page that I hope will inspire you. My photos is actually 20 years old. Boy, this little guy turned into a man quickly! Shane's matted picture, the word "play," and the banner are all popped up. I combined the last two options by stamping his age at the bottom. These were not options, but I added a couple of other techniques to the page. I've distressed all of the paper by simply rolling the edges. It's easy, and it adds great dimension! I also sewed on my page with one of the Granny Stitch'z template and purple floss from Bazzill. This template set is fabulous! It has 8 different edging stitches, and it's they are so easy and fun to work with. The purple floss is from the Crayons floss set. Both of these items can be found at a great price from Discount Cardstock.

Items used: Bazzill Eggplant Felt Cardstock, Granny Stitch'z Template, and In Stitch'z Crayon Floss Card (Discount Cardstock); Hallowe'en in Wonderland (Graphic 45); Journaling Block (Quick Quotes); Transparency Frame (Colorbok); Big Kids Slice Design Card (Making Memories); Black Buttons, Alpha Stamp Set, Swirl Clip, and Black Archival Ink (Close To My Heart); Hemp and Vintage Ribbon (stash)

Bo Bunny Noel

I picked up some new Bo Bunny Noel paper the other day.  WOW. What gorgeous paper and colors!  I see that CARDS is having a challenge to make pocket cards, so I used the fabulous paper to make a double pocket card.  The pockets leave so much room for hiding little treasures!

Items used: Bo Bunny Noel; Bazzill flower; LYB button; CTMH Ivory ribbon

Jerry is away for the weekend having his "last hurrah" fishing weekend.  I feel sorry for him - it's cold here in MN!  I understand that it got down to freezing in northern MN where he is tent camping.  Yes, I said tent camping!  I'll tell you something funny about MN weather.  Last year on this same weekend, we stayed at a resort in central MN and actually swam at the beach.  It was 80+ degrees.  What a difference!!  Hope you are having a great Saturday!

Wishing You the Joy, Hope, and Wonder

I wanted to participate in a few challenges, so I sat down and put this card together this morning.  I used Cherie's sketch for the 14th at Sassy Lil' Sketches:

This card also works for Christmas Card Challenges (trees) and for Keep it Simple (swirls).

I fussy cut the trees from Bo Bunny's Tis the Season.  There are swirls built in on the trees and paper - isn't that cool?!  Sometimes we can look right to our paper for the best treasures!  I've used a Penny Black sentiment to complete the card.

This one is going right into my box for Operation Write Home.  If you feel like making some extra Christmas cards, they are due to OWH by October 30th.  Also, have you been to the Operation Write Home Stars and Stamps blog?  There is always SO MUCH going on over there.  Tutorials, digi images, and loads of fun challenges.  Head on over there when you have a minute - you'll be glad you did!

There are several blogs having Christmas card challenges, so I will add this card to those challenges, too!

Moving Along with the Times - Christmas
Glitterbabe's Challenge - Anything Goes
Fussy and Fancy - Christmas Colors
2 Sisters Challenge Blog - Christmas for OWH
Aimee's Challenges - Christmas
Just Inspirational - Christmas
Sentimental Sundays - Christmas for OWH

Better Living through Scrapbooking Newsletter

Have you signed up for the Better Living through Scrapbooking newsletter yet?  There is so much GREAT information in it!  I think you would love having it come to your e-mail box!  There is a challenge for you in this month's newsletter, and it's all about you!!

Baby, You’re the Greatest” challenge

Create a baby layout about you, using the oldest photo you have of yourself.

It’s wonderful to pull out our own baby pictures! Sometimes we are so caught up in scrapping others that we forget to take time for our “All About Me” books. If you haven’t started a scrapbook for yourself, this would be the perfect jumping off point! I’ve used four of our challenge options for my layout, and I've highlighted them for you.

1. Scan the original photo and print it using your home printer or photo printing service, or take the photo to your local copy shop and have them make a color copy of the photo so that you can scrap the photo and save the original. I wanted my layout to have a 5×7 picture. If the quality is a little grainy to you, it is because I started with a very small picture! I scanned it and then printed it on my printer. I love this picture of my Dad holding me as a pretty happy baby!

2. Use no pastels or “baby colors” on the page (no light pinks, blues or pastel yellows) Now this was pretty easy for me! I m not a pastel girl, but rather prefer rich, warm colors. With a black and white photo, these Graphic 45 papers worked beautifully!

3. Frame the photo on your page in an unusual way.

4. Use words/letters as “art”. Cut letters and words from old magazines, junk mail, newspapers, packaging, etc. and use them in an artistic way on your page. Use them as a title, journaling, or just as embellishments on your page. Okay, I interpreted this a little differently! Instead of cutting out letters, I painted a journaling block directly on my page. This is so much fun! And very easy to do with a fan brush. You don’t even need to be perfect! When it was dry, I stamped my phrase with archival ink.

5. Use lace or ribbon on your page. I doubled some beautiful crocheted ribbon to add to the vintage feel of this layout.

A simple thing I did was distress the edges of everything. For me, it left enough clean lines, but still brought this layout back to 1962. Now, I bet you are wondering about that flower! I made it with two different colors of vellum. I used my Slice to cut scalloped circles – (4) 3-1/2″ circles and (4) 2-1/2″ circles. I crumpled them up pretty good, flattened them out and then stacked them. With four layers of each color, it was easy enough to manipulate the vellum to give it some floral poof. Give it a try – it’s really simple!

Items used: Natural Smooth CS, Cream and Wisteria Vellum (Discount Cardstock); Hallowe’en in Wonderland papers (Graphic 45); Edge Distresser and Vintage Pin (Tim Holtz); Slice Basics 1 Design Card (Making Memories); Antique White paint (Ceramcoat); Colonial White button, Colonial White crocheted ribbon, Alphabet stamp set, and black archival ink (Close To My Heart)

It's Reveal Day at Let's Scrap!

This week at Let's Scrap, we have a card sketch for you.  I simply love this sketch because it is so versatile!

And here is my example for you:

I sure do love Webster's Pages, and I pulled out some of their paper for this challenge.  The Brave Girl stamp set by Melody Ross/Unity is perfect for this paper.  I chalked my brave girl's dress, wings, and hair.  I have found this to be my preferred method of coloring.  It is so subtle and soft-looking.  Once that was done, I applied glossy accents to the hair, wings, dress, and butterflies.  If you'd like to see a closer look, just click on the picture.  The scalloped circle was cut with my circle and scalloped circle nestabilities.  Those lovely gems are from Imaginisce and set with my i-Rock tool.  Have you used that tool yet? I think I would be quite content to just put gems on everything all day long - LOL!  It's so fun and easy!

Why not play along for your chance to win the Starstruck stamp set from Verve Stamps?  Hop on over to Let's Scrap to see a picture of the set and to post your entry!

It's a Sassy Lil' Sketches Day!

It's time to play along again at Sassy Lil' Sketches!  Here is the sketch for the 14th:

Be sure to hop over to see what the "14th Sassies" have done.  You'll receive lots of inspiration from them!

Sassy Lil' Sketches gives you the whole month to play along.  Isn't that great?  You have to have your projects done by the end of the month.  For each challenge you complete during the month, you get an entry towards one of the wonderful prizes!  Check them out on my right sidebar - they are awesome again this month!!

New Book, New Look!

Sometimes it just that time to make a change.  I've had this blog you are visiting for 12 years!  Wow, that's a lot of post and a lo...
